The Asian American Documentary Network (A-Doc), is a national network of 800+ Asian American storytellers and film professionals working to increase the visibility and support of Asian Americans in the documentary field.
A-Doc members understand the vital role nonfiction films play in elevating Asian American history, perspectives and experiences in the public sphere, and the critical role filmmakers play in the social justice ecosystem. The network is committed to expanding the pipeline of stories about Asian Americans, ensuring those stories are informed by justice movements, and creating mutually-beneficial partnerships with progressive social justice organizations, social service agencies and advocacy groups rooted in Asian American communities. A-Doc aims to nurture partnerships with movement organizations, develop training for filmmakers and organizers, and craft impact strategies for discrete and thematic film campaigns.
A-Doc is a membership-driven network managed by a leadership team that are largely volunteers, with the support of two part-time staff members. We are searching for a full-time Impact Director to lead this visionary work.
The ideal candidate will have experience working within social justice organizations or movements, knowledge of the landscape of AAPI progressive organizations, and passion about the role film and the arts play in social change. They will be responsible for co-creating the strategic vision with the A-Doc Impact Steering Committee, and managing the project tasks and budget. This position is ideal for a creative leader who inspires collaboration, thinks about arts and narrative change like an organizer, and is not afraid to innovate.
The Impact Director’s responsibilities include:
- Refine and implement the overall strategic plan and develop goals, benchmarks and project timelines.
- Establish and maintain mutually-beneficial and responsibly-held strategic partnerships between A-Doc and local, regional and national organizations that serve AAPI communities. Create mechanisms to foster ongoing listening and learning between the network and partner organizations.
- Work with A-Doc Leadership Team and working groups to organize and convene virtual and in-person workshops, screening events and labs for a range of stakeholders, including A-Doc filmmakers and partner organization staff.
- Manage a project calendar, events, and tasks, and coordinating tasks with the A-Doc administrative staff and members.
- Assist in efforts to expand the resources for this work from philanthropic and commercial partners.
- Lead strategy development to engage audiences for A-Doc films, and maximize the impact of key A-Doc films.
Ideal candidates will have the following skills, experience, and passions:
- Innovative, out of the box thinker, who thrives at the intersection of art and organizing.
- Passion for using storytelling, art and culture as a way to strengthen movements.
- Experience in serving AAPI communities via creative, advocacy, policy or grassroots organizing capacities. Sensitivity and respect for the spectrum of AAPI community experiences and needs.
- 5+ years related experience in community engagement, partnership cultivation, and/or stakeholder engagement.
- Experience in creative/arts-based social movement organizing. Knowledge of case studies of film initiatives that have advanced movements for social justice, a plus.
- Experience working within a collective or other horizontally structured organization or coalition.
- Experience in facilitation, training, consensus-building and/or capacity-building.
- Ability to take initiative, think strategically, and solve problems independently.
- Outstanding verbal, public speaking, and interpersonal communication skills, in multiple settings and among people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.
- Willingness to learn and grow as an individual and as a part of a non-hierarchical membership network.
Salary range for this full-time position is $60-75K, plus vacation. This is a remote position, involving regular standing meetings online with the team, and travel for in-person gatherings when it is safe to do so.
