A-Doc 2025 AAPI Futures Impact Producer Fellow Shareback | Reina Bonta and Carlo Velayo

Join our 2025 A-Doc AAPI Futures Impact Producer Fellows Reina Bonta and Carlo Velayo for a conversation on the MAYBE IT’S JUST THE RAIN and NURSE UNSEEN impact campaigns!

The speakers discuss how their films moved beyond the screen through community-centered screenings, partnerships, and activations—one grounded in mental health and immigrant care work, the other in women’s sport, diaspora, and youth empowerment—and how documentary can operate as a form of living infrastructure for communities navigating systems not built to support them. This shareback is moderated by Ash Goh Hua, our A-Doc Impact Coordinator. This is the second of two sharebacks from our impact producer fellows. Watch our first shareback here with Lan Dinh and Yennie Lee.

Both of these films are very personal to the fellows. Reina is on the football team  being showcased in her short, and along this journey she learns history about her family while Carlo’s film touched upon anti-Asian hate during Covid-19. Reina focused her impact campaign on youth, Filipinas, and AAPI groups. Carlo’s team curated a number of community and market screenings which led to a theatrical release and increased awareness of the role of Filipinx nurses had during the pandemic.
